Waste: Where do Children Figure?
-By Sucharita Dutta-Asane
What is waste but that which we produce in our houses, offices, gardens, and factories? While it takes little time to generate this waste, it takes endless time to turn that garbage into useful end products for society. In the meanwhile, what happens to all the junk human beings generate? They fill dustbins, trucks backs, and finally landfills. Along with adults, children can lead the way in reducing this waste and creating a more environment friendly society and world.
Waste management is three tiered—reduce, reuse, and recycle. Recycling is not a solution, it only brings back into circulation that which we throw away. The best way to stem the flow of rubbish into dustbins and landfills is to reduce and reuse.
Children can help in the process by following some simple steps in their daily life and activities.
REDUCE
Carry cloth or paper bags to shops and stores for purchases. Cadbury and chocolates already come packaged. What use is a plastic carry bag again? The milk is already safe in its plastic pouch. Why add another plastic bag to your garbage bin? The cloth bag will help to reduce the amount of plastic that shops generate daily.
Don’t get carried away with the tempting packaging of toys and books. Excess packaging is of no use to anybody. Packaging should be only to provide a safe enclosure for the product and display any relevant product information. Beyond that, it only serves to lure. Use bottles for the water you drink in school; avoid plastic bottles and tetra packs.
