Birding can be a family activity, a social activity or a community activity. And should you like to do it all alone, it is a pleasure too as it brings out a feeling of solitude. Birding requires a little investment and equipment. A good illustrated bird field guide book, a notepad and a good pair of binoculars, a keen eye for observation and the patience to mingle with nature, are all you need to become a bird-watching enthusiast.
While setting out on the adventure, you should avoid red, black, white and strikingly coloured clothes that scare the birds. Instead, you should wear dull, dull-green or dead-leaf colored clothes that camouflage well with the surroundings. You should also use rubber sled shoes and avoid swift movements and walking on dead leaves or twigs which make a lot of noise and frighten the birds. You have to choose a suitable spot – trees, shrubs or grass as cover and sit there motionless, sometimes for hours together. Occasionally one may have to advance on his knees or crawl like a serpent to approach the bird without disturbing it. Sometimes it can be a tedious wait but at the end, it is worth the efforts put in. The birds’ daily habits can be fascinating games of skills for you. |
