Animal Astronauts – Animals and insects in space missions

Long before humans went into space, animals and insects were used to test space equipment. Dogs, cats, monkeys, rats, frogs, spiders and flies-these animals have been pioneers in their own right.
1940s:
As strange as it might sound, the first creatures in space happened to be a bunch of fruit flies accompanied by corn seeds aboard a U.S launched V2 rocket......
1950s:
Then in September 1951, a monkey and 11 mice were sent to space in a US Aerobee rocket and recovered later.....
1960s:
Two female Samoyed huskies, Belka and Strelka, orbited successfully in August 1960.....
1970s:
In November 1970, the USA's Orbiting Frog Otolith satellite (OFO-A) launched two bullfrogs into orbit for a week. Anita and Arabella........
1980s:
The USSR's first space primates were monkeys Abrek and Bion, who orbited in December 1983....
1990s:
Four monkeys flew aboard the last Bion flights of the Soviet Union along with frogs and fruit flies.. ..
2000:
In February 2003, space shuttle Columbia STS-107 broke up on re-entry and its crew .....
